Quayle United Methodist Church, located in northeast Oklahoma City, celebrated 133 years of ministry. The theme for the month-long celebration in September was “Homecoming: Welcome one another,” based on Romans 15:7.

The celebration began with a prayer luncheon led by the prayer connect ministry under the guidance of Rev. Erica Thomas. The music ministry offered an annual musical which featured the men’s choir, the cherub children’s choir, the praise team and the mass choir. The music ministry is led by Minister of Music Jessie Davis-Wesley and worship chair Jacqueline Devereaux.

The month concluded with two Sunday worship celebrations. These occurred with our regular 10:00 am service and a recently developed 12:30 pm contemporary service. The guest preacher for both services was Pastor Ronda Kingwood from Heart of Christ UMC in Wichita, KS. Quayle is served by Rev. Dr. Elvyn Hamilton.

“I am blown away by the rich history of Quayle and all the places they’ve been and the members that have been associated with Quayle and the pastors and bishops that have served there,” stated Rev. Dr. Bessie Hamilton, Associate Director of Connectional Ministry for New Faith Communities and Multi Ethnic Initiatives.

Tulsa

On Sunday, September 17, University United Methodist Church (UUMC) came together as a church family and a community to celebrate their presence as the cornerstone of love and compassion on the University of Tulsa’s campus for the past 100 years. The celebration was a joyous occasion filled with worship, fellowship, and reminiscence.

The day began with a special worship service that included the unveiling of a beautiful centennial altar cross, a breathtaking performance of “The Solid Rock” by the Chancel Choir -- a piece of music uniquely commissioned specifically for the Centennial -- and a sermon by Bishop James Nunn.

“I never expected to be part of such a legacy,” remarked co-pastor Matt Austin. “This church has wonderful bones and wonderful DNA. The congregation has been here for 100 years, serving and loving the people who live immediately around here. I didn’t expect the love that I would feel for this community after being here for such a short time.”

Following the service, there was a joyful reception that provided a platform for members, clergy, community leaders and friends to share stories and celebrate together. Tours of the church and talks about the church’s historical memorabilia continued throughout the afternoon.

“We had 248 people in worship, were joined by four of our former pastors, and welcomed six new members into our church family!” gushed Tere Talley, office administer and congregation member.

UUMC’s Centennial Celebration stands as a tribute to its profound impact, not only on the lives of its congregation, but on the wider community, as well. They look forward to their next 100 years with great anticipation.

Said Connie Gibson, district superintendent for Council Oak district, “Great worship and praise to God! An inspired word from Bishop Nunn followed by a great celebration of 100 years of ministry and making disciples of Christ! The future is bright for the next 100 years!’

“The Centennial ultimately celebrates the past, but also represents the future of the United Methodist Church. We are going to use innovative ministry, organizational, and financial approaches to increase our ability to transform the world through discipleship,” stated co-pastor Matt Patrick.
