| | | Native American Ministries Sunday | | | | April 18, 2010
Native American Ministries Sunday recognizes and supports the contributions of Native Americans to the church and society. The observance, approved by the 1988 General Conference, is one of six special church wide Sunday offerings. Click here to donate online. (Janet Camp, Enid Intertribal Council member, describes her baskets)
Advice on observing Native American Ministries Sunday
1. Do teach Native history as a regular part of U.S. history. Don’t teach about "Indians" only at Thanksgiving.
2. Do avoid arts and crafts and activities that trivialize Native dress, dance or ceremony.
3. Do use materials that present Native heroes who fought to defend their people. Do use materials that show Native women, elders and children as integral and important to Native societies. Don’t use materials that present as heroes only those Native people who aided Europeans.
